The inner and outer ring raceways of tapered roller bearings are conical, and the rollers are tapered so that their conical surfaces and axes, if extended, converge at a common point on the bearing's main axis. This design ensures the cones move coaxially, avoiding sliding motion between raceways and roller surfaces.

This conical geometry creates a linear contact patch, allowing these bearings to handle higher loads compared to spherical (ball) bearings, which have point contact. The tangential speeds of the roller surfaces match their raceways along the contact patch, eliminating differential scrubbing.

Tapered Roller Bearings are mainly used to support axial forces in both directions. The rollers are kept in place by a flange on the inner ring, preventing them from popping out due to their conical shape.
